Dr. Marshall,

The reward portion of PBIS is a huge concern to me as I notice a growing number of schools implementing this program.

I have written my thoughts here:

Interested in learning more--especially strategies.

Teaching a procedure to redirect impulses is an excellent starting point. An example is demonstrated at impulse management.

Too true, I think the biggest problem in the American educational system is a motivation gap -- very few kids feel that the education is inherently rewarding.

I have been teaching for Grand Canyon On line University since 2007. I mainly teach Classroom Management. If you would like to see the experiment data just let me know via email or 262 889 8384.

Class I want to share with you a wonderful experiment I did a last year with a 5th grade class. It concerned Marshal's Hierarchy of Social Development that you can find in your Charles text starting with page 208.

Many of the students had me for a substitute before. They welcomed the idea that they would be the center of my experiment. I was with them 3 1/2 days. It was a marvelous 3 1/2 days too. The kids were unusually well behaved. T

I repeated this experiment with 3rd graders in March of last year when I was subbing for another friend of mine. I stayed with the kids 12 1/2 days. Some more interesting data to share with you all. I

Reflect on how you are communicating with her. Ask yourself how she will perceive your communications. If there is any feeling of coercion, change your communications.

She is reacting to your attempts to control her.Teach the levels of social development so that she will reflect on how she is behaving and continue to talk to her with positive terms assuring her that you have confidence in her ability to be responsible.

I have a 15 year old daughter that is unwilling to discuss any of her behaviors and blames her mother and I for all the problems. We have given her choices and even asked her to come up with some consequences for when she acts up. She either says "I dunno...." or suggests something that she acknowledges will not help herself grow. How do you get un unwilling participant to become a willing participant?

This was very inspiring to me - and particularly the part about this teacher starting a new career at 56! I'm 54 and started my teaching career 3 years ago and have often wondered if I made a mistake - especially after a particularly hard day. I love that she is finding the strength to continue in her new career path, too!
I'm reading your book and reading the blog and plan to begin implementing these ideas after the winter break. Thank you.
